The Romantics

Sherborne Abbey

Some of the finest choral works of the late-Romantic era:
Brahms (1833 – 1897) Fest- und Gedenksprüche (Festive and Commemorative Sayings)
Parry (1848 – 1918) Songs of Farewell
Bruckner (1824 – 1896) Four Motets
Mendelssohn (1809 – 1847) Verleih uns Frieden
Brahms Geistliches Lied
Karg-Elert (1877 – 1933) Symphonic Canzona
Organist Simon Clarkson
Almost his swansong, Parry’s six Songs of Farewell give us a much more intimate view of the composer than more famous works such as I was glad. A summary of his musical life, they reflect his love of English madrigals and partsongs as well as the influence of German composers like Brahms. In turn, the Brahms motets show the influence of earlier composers, with antiphonal chorus effects and word painting that work to great effect in the Abbey.
