Music from the New World

Saturday 10 June 2006 at 8:30pm
St Mary’s Church, Dorchester

Our summer concert takes us across the Atlantic for a wide range of music from North and Central America.
We explore the rich Baroque heritage of Latin America, including the exuberant setting for double choir of the Mass Ego flos campi by de Padilla. Padilla was a seventeenth century Spanish composer who spent much of his life in Mexico and the Mass is a wonderful combination of the twin influences of the musical style of his Spanish roots and the traditional colours and rhythms of Central American music.
Turning to North America, we go forward in time for Aaron Copland’s Four Motets, Barber’s Agnus Dei (the choral setting of his famous Adagio) and right up to the present day with three pieces by Eric Whitacre, whose choral music is enjoying huge popularity at the moment.

£7 available from 13th May
