Our March concert brings together two twentieth-century works; one a well-loved classic, the other as yet less well known, but containing a brief flavour of nine of the UK’s most respected contemporary composers.
Written in 1947, Duruflé’s Requiem has become one of the favourite choral works of the twentieth-century, popular with audience and singers alike. Duruflé breaks away from the dramatic settings of Berlioz and Verdi, instead using the Gregorian chant from the Mass for the Dead, combined with sumptuous impressionistic harmonies, to create a vision of optimism and peace.
A Garland for Linda is an evocative anthology of works commemorating the life of Linda McCartney.  A diverse group of nine British composers was invited to contribute to the cycle, which includes movements by composers such as John Rutter, Richard Rodney Bennett, David Matthews and John Tavener, all of whom respond to the general theme of healing and hope in their own individual styles.
