Masterworks for Lent

Saturday 14 March 2009 at 7:30pm
Sherborne Abbey

Our Lent concert brings together two great a cappella settings, from two widely separated musical periods. The stunning setting of the Requiem Mass by the Spanish composer, Tomas Luis de Victoria, was written in 1605 and is widely regarded as a masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance music.

Written almost three hundred years later, in 1922, the Swiss composer Frank Martin’s Mass for double choir has been called one of the greatest choral works of the twentieth century; all the more amazing, then, that the composer would not allow it to be performed until 1963 because he believed it to be unworthy. It is a great favourite with the Chamber Choir, and, as we have not performed it since 2001, is long overdue another outing!

£5 (unreserved), reserved £8, £10, £12
